Pre-sessional course information

All Summer 2023 pre-sessional courses will be taught online.

All Autumn 2023 pre-sessional courses will be face-to-face (see below)

Students taking part in online Summer pre-sessional courses are not required to travel to Kingston upon Thames. Visas are not required to enrol and we can accept a variety of English language tests with applications (please see Entry Requirements page).

Please check the national government guidance before travelling to or within in the UK and please contact the course administrators if you wish to come to the UK and/or stay in Kingston University halls accommodation.

To complete the Summer online course, students will need:

  • a laptop or PC with at least 8GB of RAM
  • a webcam and headset
  • a stable and reliable internet connection: internet speeds with a minimum bandwidth of 600kbps (up/down), with a recommended speed of 1.5 Mbps (up/down)
  • a suitable quiet place to study alone
  • a detachable webcam for assessments.

Who are the courses for?

The courses are designed for international and European Union students who want to improve their English language skills and familiarise themselves with studying at university before starting studies at Kingston or another university.

This includes:

  • students who wish to prepare for university study and have met their English language requirement for their main course at Kingston University;
  • students who do not meet the English language entry requirements for their chosen university course;
  • students joining Kingston University as part of an exchange programme (eg Erasmus or Study Abroad); and
  • students planning to study at another British university.

Our pre-sessional English course is accredited by the British Association of Lecturers in English for Academic Purposes (BALEAP). This organisation sets rigorous criteria to ensure that courses in English language and study skills for speakers of other languages are of a high standard and provide an excellent quality of service.
