Dr Carol Dicken

About

I am a qualified social worker and practice educator and worked in both local authority and voluntary sector organisations prior to becoming a lecturer at Kingston University in 1998. Starting as a generic neighbourhood social worker I have worked with adults, and with children and their families, later specialising in the field of drug and alcohol issues.

As a practice educator I ran a unit for student social workers within a voluntary sector drug service. Within the Department of Social Work and Social Care I am currently the strategic lead for practice education and course leader for the PGC Practice Education. I am also a tutor to Social Work students and a module leader teaching about reflection, critical analysis and the application of social work knowledge to practice.

In June 2014 I was seconded to a role as Faculty Lead for Practice Education and following this I was Director of Practice Education for the School of Allied Health, Midwifery and Social Care from 2016-2020 with strategic overview of the practice education activities which are an essential part of the qualifying courses for the professions in the School.

I have a strong interest and commitment to interprofessional working and learning in practice and provide a social work perspective as a committee member of the National Association of Educators in Practice (NAEP). I am also a member of the Centre for the Advancement of Interprofessional Education (CAIPE).

I am also a member of the British Association of Social Workers (BASW) Professional Capabilities and Development Practice Policy and Education Group (PPEG) and contributed to the refresh of the Practice Educators Professional Standards (PEPS).

I have completed an Education Doctorate investigating Interprofessional Practice Learning.
