Dr Ahmed Elbediwy

About

I joined Kingston University as Lecturer in Clinical Biochemistry in Late 2018, following a very successful postdoctoral research position in the Francis Crick Institute, London. I obtained my PhD in 2013 from University College, London under the supervision of Prof. Karl Matter in Cell Biology and Biochemistry looking at essential signalling pathways in Cancer and how these are disrupted. My Postdoctoral research was with Professor Barry Thompson at the Francis Crick Institute, London looking at growth control mechanisms in the context of cancer initiation. During my time at the Crick I developed my teaching with a joint collaboration with UCL and was awarded an AFHEA from this venture.  I also made strong industrial collaborations with GSK by jointly working on a chemical screen to identify drugs involved in cancer inhibition. When I joined Kingston i quickly established myself as an integral part of the Biomolecular Science teaching team and obtained my FHEA within the first year, before becoming a Senior Lecturer and course leader for BSc Biochemistry in 2020 and course leader for BSc Biological Sciences in 2023. I teach on a range of courses including: Biochemistry, Biomedical Sciences, Biological Sciences, Pharmacology and Nutrition courses as well as teach on the MSc programmes in Cancer Biology and Biomedical Science. My student focused innovative teaching has led me to be consistently nominated for awards by the University led Union of Kingston students 'Academic Impact Awards' culminating in winning the outstanding contribution to learning and teaching award in 2022. My current research interests focuses on various input signals in the context of cancer initiation and natural compounds and their effects on oncogenes as well as how metabolism can affect signalling pathways in cancer.
