Dr Alison Kelly

About

Microbiology became tangible once I started work as an Assistant Scientific Officer at the Institute of Food Research, Reading within the rapid methods section of the microbiology department. At IFR I worked on a variety of projects investigating rapid isolation and detection methods for category 2 food-borne pathogens such as Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella species. The institute was a forwarding thinking employer and it was common for those without specialist qualifications to achieve these on a part time basis whilst working. In this manner I achieved my first degree whilst I subsequently completed my PhD on Campylobacter jejuni at Reading University before joining Kingston in 2005 as a lecturer. I am Course Director for the BSc (Hons) Biological Sciences degree at Kingston which was recently awarded Royal Society of Biology accreditation. Originally a food microbiologist/microbial physiologist, I continue to pursue research in medical and veterinary microbiology.
