Dr Ingrid Bacon

About

Dr Ingrid Bacon is a Chartered Psychologist and Mental Health Occupational Therapist. She is the Director of Research and Senior Lecturer in Mental Health at Kingston and St George's University of London.

Ingrid holds a PhD from Brunel University London, a MSc in Psychology from Kingston University, MSc in Health Studies from Exeter University, and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.  She is a Visiting Lecturer at University of São Paulo - USP, Brazil.

She is an experienced educator, researcher and mental health therapist, with more than 20 years of clinical experience in mental health. She has worked in a variety of mental health settings in the UK, West Africa and Brazil. Her specialisms include Motivational Interviewing, Systemic Family Therapy, Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction (MBSR), Schema Therapy and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. 

Ingrid worked as a Senior Lecturer in Occupational Therapy at London South Bank University, School of Health and Social Care. Prior to this, she worked at Brunel University as a Lecturer in Occupational Therapy, within the Department of Clinical Sciences, Division of Occupational Therapy and Community Nursing. She has experience in coordinating course programmes, module leadership, PhD and MSc supervision.

Ingrid publishes in national and international journals, presents at national and international conferences, and has been successful in obtaining grants. She is a reviewer for the International Journal of Mental Health and Addiction, Mental Health Review Journal, Nursing Standards, Journal of Occupational Science and Scandinavian Journal of Psychology. she is a member of the HSCE Applied Health and Social Care Research Center, Health Education Research and Evaluation (HERE) and the Mental Health Research Groups

Teaching and learning

Senior lecturer teaching interdisciplinary academic modules on BSc and MSc programmes within the Faculty of Health, Social Care and Education since 2016.  Ingrid works with undergraduate and post graduate students in a range of capacities as an educator, personal tutor, research supervisor, seminar leader, and module leader. She facilitates student-centred learning, by tailoring teaching to students' needs, skill sets and culture.  She uses constructive pedagogy by encouraging creative learning, critical thinking and reflexivity. Ingrid works in close collaboration with students, service users and clinical practitioners. She contributed to inclusive curriculum design planning and development at Brunel University London, London Southbank University and currently at Kingston University School of Nursing Pre-reg programme and Nursing Associate programmes.

Research

Ingrid obtained a PhD Studentship at Brunel University in 2011 and completed the PhD research in 2015. The thesis is entitled: An exploration of the experience of codependency through interpretive phenomenological analysis. The PhD research study made a recognised and original contribution to a field of codependency, with research outputs published, presented at national and international conferences and radio interviews.Her research contributed to the Research Excellence Framework REF 22
