Dr Payam Khazaeinejad

About

I am a Senior Lecturer in Solid Mechanics at the School of Engineering of Kingston University London. Additionally, I hold the positions of Director of Postgraduate Research and Course Leader for the Undergraduate Mechanical Engineering programmes.

I obtained my PhD in Engineering from the University of Edinburgh. I am a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of Advance HE (formerly known as the UK Higher Education Academy). Additionally, I am a Senior Member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), and a Member of the Institute of Physics (IOP), the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and EPSRC Peer Review College.

My primary research focus and specialisation are centered on solid mechanics and advanced computational methodologies, with a special focus on harnessing insights from biological paradigms to innovate in materials and system design. These models not only mirror nature's brilliance but also introduce unique properties spanning various scales, from micro to macro, optimising adaptability and performance. Through advanced algorithms and simulations, I delve deeper into material behaviour, transcending the boundaries of conventional experiments to reveal hidden structures within them. Beyond the scope of materials science, I have a profound interest in dissecting failure mechanisms. My studies center on the resilience of infrastructural elements and their components under multi-hazard or extreme thermomechanical actions. From understanding the nuances of pharmaceutical tablets to the intricacies of subsea pipelines, my research aims to harness the potential of computational modelling, driving forward-thinking breakthroughs across multiple scientific domains.

Research

I am currently involved in several projects that aim to leverage computational tools and biological paradigms to develop innovative solutions for a range of engineering challenges. These include:

  • Evaluation of fatigue resistance of bio-inspired piezoelectric scaffolds: This research project is focused on the fatigue life prediction of bio-inspired piezoelectric scaffolds. By carrying out a coupled fluid-structure interaction analysis, we are investigating the effect of loading and electrical charges on the scaffold's performance.
  • Finite element simulation of mineralisation mechanism in bone-inspired piezoelectric scaffolds: This research project involves using advanced computational tools to design and evaluate piezoelectric tissue scaffolds that mimic the mineralisation process in bone. By developing scaffolds that can adapt to environmental variations to achieve optimal functionality, we aim to improve tissue engineering outcomes.
  • Shape optimisation using CAD/FEM integration in the context of additive manufacturing: In this project, we are exploring the feasibility of using a computationally efficient visualisation approach coupled with an efficient shape optimisation technique. By achieving a harmonious balance between form and function in engineering designs, we aim to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of additive manufacturing processes.
  • Finite element modelling and simulation of subsea flexible risers: This research project is focused on developing finite element models to study the structural integrity of subsea flexible risers. By investigating the behaviour of these risers under different loading conditions, we aim to improve their reliability and durability in offshore applications.
  • Net zero carbon design for climate change mitigation and resilience: This project explores the integration of smart materials and bio-inspired systems to help mitigate climate change and build resilience. By leveraging advances in materials science and engineering, we aim to develop sustainable solutions that can help address the challenges of climate change.
