Dr Michal Bosy

About

I am Lecturer in Mathematics and Computing at Kingston University since 2021. My research areas are Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computing. I focus on the design, analysis and efficient implementation of finite or boundary element methods for partial differential equations.

I received my PhD in 2017 from the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, working under the supervision of Victorita Dolean and Gabriel  Barrenechea on Efficient discretisation and domain decomposition preconditioners for incompressible fluid mechanics. Before moving to Kingston University, I was a Research Fellow at University College London from 2019. I worked with Erik Burman and Timo Betcke on Coupling of finite element and boundary element methods. Between 2017-2019 I worked with Giancarlo Sangalli at the University of Pavia on Efficient solvers for Isogeometric methods.

Research

As a mathematician and computer scientist, I try to understand the world by

  • Modelling real-life problems using differential equations.
  • Building efficient solvers for large linear systems.
  • Developing numerical software.
  • Researching machine learning approaches for uncertainty.

My research interests are focused on the design and analysis of coupling methods for partial differential equations. These methods arise because of considering multi-physics problems, non-conforming methods or using domain decomposition methods. The applications that I have studied include such fields of science and engineering as fluid dynamics, continuum mechanics, wave propagation and biomolecular physics.

My theoretical investigations include the design of well-posed discrete problems and a priori error analysis for Galerkin finite element methods using continuous and discontinuous approximation spaces.

My computational studies include the design of efficient iterative solvers using domain decomposition methods that allow taking advantage of modern parallel architectures.
