Dr Jean-Marie Peron

About

In 2021, I completed my PhD in medicinal chemistry under Prof. R C. Hider, King's College London. After a few short research assignments, in 2002 I joined Prof. Keith Jones' group at Kingston University as a research fellow. During that time, I worked on semi-synthetic cardioactive steroids (bufadienolides); on a project funded by the Special Trustees of St Thomas' Hospital. In 2006, I changed direction and took on the role of NMR senior technician at Kingston, supporting teaching and research in the School of LSPC. During that time I collaborated with a number of academic colleagues offering NMR expertise to help answer varied scientific questions. In December 2017, I returned to the Department of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences, where I am now a senior lecturer in organic and pharmaceutical chemistry.

Teaching and learning

I teach chemistry on a number of courses. Although my role is to teach organic and pharmaceutical chemistry at levels 4-7, I also teach general chemistry to level 4 life sciences students (LS4002) and NMR and spectroscopy data analysis and interpretation to level 5 pharmaceutical science students (CH5007). I lead two modules: CH4005 - Foundation Chemistry and CH7070 - Design, Discovery and Development of Pharmaceuticals. Since November 2020, I have been the Admissions Tutor for the undergraduate Chemistry courses and undergraduate Pharmaceutical Science courses. I am involved in supervising a number of MPharm, MSc or BSc projects during the academic year. I also am the personal tutor for 25-30 students in the Department of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Research

My current research interests include the structure elucidation of naturally occurring bioactive compounds (RMM<800DA) using high-resolution FT-NMR spectroscopy, and organic synthesis to prepare molecules with medicinal properties. I also collaborate on a number of projects where solution phase NMR is used as a means to quantify drugs (e.g. in formulation studies), their metabolites or investigate drug stability (e.g. anticancer drug cocktails). My interest is not limited to organic-type chemistry, I am also keen to collaborate on materials chemistry projects. I currently supervise and co-supervise 3 PhD students in three different fields: NMR research, cancer research, and cosmetics research.

Leadership and management

Course Leader for Chemistry (June 2023 - current):

I am the Course Leader for the undergraduate Chemistry programmes (F100, F123). My experience as Admissions Tutor has given me clear insights into the recruitment processes for the two interlinked courses. This will inform my role as Chemistry CL, as we move forward and implement changes, such as embedding KU's Future Skills scheme, in the chemistry course.

KUDOS Digital Champion (June 2023 - current):

Helping colleagues in the Department of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences adopt and improve their use of MS Office 365, thus getting closer to fulfil the Town House Strategy of digital literacy for our staff and our students.

Admissions Tutor for Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Science (Sept. 2020 - June 2023):

I was responsible for reviewing a number of applications to undergraduate courses in Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences, working in close collaboration with the Faculty Admissions Team and the Faculty Recruitment Team. A key aspect of my role involved facilitating clearing and admissions activities in the Department of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences and ensuring academic colleagues were equipped for clearing.
