Mr Peter Martins da Silva

About

Prior to starting a second career in academia in 2009 as an hourly paid lecturer, I had mid-level and senior management roles in the manufacturing (building systems, automotive and defence/aerospace), chemicals and telecommunications sectors.  I started my first career with United Technologies Corporation (UTC) working in corporate finance with the Otis Elevator and Automotive Divisions, then moved into strategic planning and corporate development at UTC's corporate HQ working on acquisitions and divestitures.  I then changed industries moving to Union Carbide's Specialty Chemicals Division where I also focused on acquisitions and divestitures, but this time in the plastic additives and biomaterials sectors.  My last roles were in telecommunications where I worked in senior corporate development positions at Ameritech International, Sprint and Flag Telecom.  More recently I have been a consultant for BT, Inmarsat, Tata Communications and other telecom companies.  During my time at Ameritech and Sprint, I was heavily involved in Ameritech's successful consortium formation, due diligence and winning bids to privatise the Hungarian and Belgian government-owned telecoms monopolies, and Sprint's winning consortium to build a second long-distance carrier in Brazil.  I am currently working on a PhD which will investigate how the above Hungarian and Belgian telecom companies have performed from a Dynamic Capabilities theory perspective since their privatizations in the mid 1990s.  In addition to my PhD research, I teach undergraduate and postgraduate classes in Strategic Management, International Business Environment & Trade, Culture and International Business and Cross-cultural Communications.
